Men's Hockey Defeats Clarkson 4-1 to Split Opening ECAC Weekend
November 07, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (11/7/09) -- Junior Matt Arhontas and senior Mark Magnowski each tallied three points and junior Alan Reynolds made 31 saves to lift the 13th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 4-1 win over Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
Reynolds lifted the Tigers in the early going as he made 18 of his 31 saves in the opening 20 minutes of action. Princeton got an early lead in the game when senior Dan Bartlett redirected a point shot from sophomore Derrick Pallis past Clarkson netminder Paul Karpowich but despite the goal, it was Clarkson that controlled most of the play in the opening period, outshooting the Tigers 19-8 in the opening stanza.
Momentum began to swing Princeton's way in the second period and the Tigers took advantage with a pair of goals. The Tigers started the second period on the power play and cashed in on it at 1:57 when Magnowski scored his first goal of the season. Junior Mike Kramer took a shot from the right side and the rebound bounced off Karpowich into the body of Magnowski and into the Clarkson goal. Arhontas had the secondary assist on the goal.
Arhontas made the score 3-0 at 12:31 of the second period when Magnowski caused a turnover along the boards on the forecheck and got the puck to Arhontas, who skated towards the net and slid a backhander through the legs of Karpowich. Princeton outshot Clarkson 17-6 in the second period and shots were even for the game through two periods.
Clarkson got on the scoreboard 3:10 into the third period when Matt Beca scored his sixth of the season by redirected a Lauri Tuohimaa pass past Reynolds, but Princeton closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal from Arhontas at 18:07. Kramer and Magnowski assisted on the goal.
Reynolds made a career-high 31 saves for his first win of the season and his first since December of 2007. Karpowich made 30 saves in the loss as Princeton outshot the Golden Knights 34-32.
Princeton is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the ECAC. The Tigers continue their schedule next weekend at home against Dartmouth and Harvard.
