Wrestling Heads To Lewisburg For Tri-Meet With Bucknell, Drexel
December 16, 2009 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team, which already has more wins this season than it did in the previous three combined, will head to Lewisburg, Pa., this Friday to compete in a tri-meet with Bucknell and Drexel. Princeton and Bucknell will open the competition at 11 a.m., while Princeton-Drexel will follow that match.
Princeton is 3-3 this season, including a victory last weekend over the Merchant Marine Academy. The Tigers also made their debut in the EIWA individual rankings, as freshman Garrett Frey moved to No. 3 at 125 pounds. Frey went 3-0 last weekend and already has an individual championship at the season-opening Binghamton Open. Head coach Chris Ayres is hoping his second-winningest wrestler, Kurt Brendel (184), will be available this weekend. Brendel has 12 wins this season, but did not compete against Binghamton, Liberty or the Merchant Marines last weekend.
One Tiger wrestler who has a chance to get to double-digit wins this weekend is Luis Ramos, a 141-pound freshman from North Carolina. Ramos won twice last weekend and is 4-2 in dual matches.
Bucknell is 3-3 on the season and is ranked just outside the national Top 25. The Bison have four Top 20 wrestlers in their lineup, including eighth-ranked Kevin LeValley (18-3) at 149 pounds. The Bison defeated Rutgers 26-12 in their last dual match; the Scarlet Knights own a 34-3 win over Princeton earlier this season.
Drexel is 2-2 on the season with wins over York and Sacred Heart and losses to Maryland and Pittsburgh. Junior heavyweight Kyle Frey has 11 wins, while senior Steve Mytych (133) has 10 wins on the season.
