PRINCETON (12/3/09) - The Princeton women's hockey team hits the road for Northern New York this weekend for its final league weekend of the 2009 calendar year. The Tigers visit St. Lawrence and fourth-ranked Clarkson for games on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
The Tigers have split each of their last two weekends and a single goal, or two with an empty netter, has decided each of their last five games. The stretch began with a 2-1 overtime win at Harvard three weeks ago and continued over the last four home games with 3-2 and 3-1 wins over Colgate and Boston University, and losses of 1-0 and 3-2 to Cornell and Boston University.
Last weekend the Tigers split with BU, winning on Friday and falling on Saturday. In the win, the Tigers pulled ahead with two power-play goals in the first period to build an insurmountable lead that was sealed with an empty-net goal. A day later, it was BU that struck first, taking leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Tigers came back to tie the score at 1-1 and 2-2, but could not overcome the third Terrier goal.
Seven Tigers tallied points over the weekend with juniors Sasha Sherry and Laura Martindale and sophomores Heather Landry and Paula Romanchuk all notching a pair of points. Martindale, with a goal and an assist in the win, was the only player with a multiple-point game. Sherry and Landry each had a goal and an assist and Romanchuk had two helpers.
Sophomore Danielle DiCesare, who scored Princeton's first goal in Friday's win, continues to lead the Tigers with 14 points on six goals and eight assists, yet she trails other members of the team in each individual category. Landry leads the squad with seven goals and Romanchuk has a team-high nine assists. The trio sits atop the Princeton scoring charts and they are the only three members of the team with double-digit point totals. A pair of freshmen, Kelly Cooke and Corey Stearns, round out Princeton's top-five scorers.
Three of Princeton's goals over the weekend came on the power play, which helped move the Tigers to fifth in the nation at a 20.6 percent power-play efficiency. The Tigers are one of six teams scoring on better than 20 percent of their chances. The Tigers have also done a good job of limiting their opponents' chances on goal, holding opponents to 20.5 shots per game. Only Cornell, at 20.25, has allowed fewer shots per game.
There were no league games played last weekend. Cornell remains atop the standings with a 6-1-1 league record and 13 points. Clarkson and Harvard are tied for second with 12 points each, while Princeton and travel-partner Quinnipiac are even in fourth with 11 points. St. Lawrence currently has seven points and is in seventh place.
Princeton opens the weekend on Friday afternoon at St. Lawrence. The Tigers hold a 24-16-3 all-time series edge over the Saints and are 14-7-1 all-time in Appleton Arena. The Tigers took both meetings a season ago, winning 4-2 at Princeton in November and 2-1 at St. Lawrence in February. Sherry had two goals, including the game winner, in the November win, while then senior Christine Foster had a goal and an assist in the February triumph.
St. Lawrence is currently 6-5-4 overall and 3-3-1 in the ECAC. The Saints are 2-1-1 in their last four after a split at Ohio State last weekend. St. Lawrence has league wins over Yale, Brown and Cornell, and league losses at Clarkson, Dartmouth and Harvard.
The Tigers conclude the weekend at Clarkson on Saturday afternoon. Princeton leads the all-time series the Golden Knights 11-3-1 overall and is 7-2 in games played at Cheel Arena. The teams have played seven-straight one-goal games with Princeton holding the upper hand in four of those meetings, including the last meeting in February of last season. Clarkson took the first game 3-2 in Princeton in November. Clarkson's Kimberly McKenney had the game winner in the first meeting despite Princeton goals from sophomore Julie Johnson and DiCesare. Sherry and Martindale provided the goals in the Princeton win.
Clarkson is currently ranked fourth in the nation with a 12-4-1 overall record and a 6-1mark in league play. After opening the season with an 11-1-1 record, Clarkson has dropped three of four games and been shut out in all three losses, coming at Cornell and Minnesota twice. The Golden Knights have held opponents to a goal or less in 10 of their 17 games and have only surrendered three or more goals twice. Clarkson has only allowed a total of six goals in its seven league contests this year.
