Both Swim/Dive Teams Hold Big Leads Early At Bucknell Invitational
December 05, 2009 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
Both the Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving teams got off to successful starts to the 2009 Bucknell Invitational. The Princeton women, who got a record-setting swim from junior Megan Waters, led the field by 250 points after the first day, while the Princeton men have a 261-point lead in the three-day meet.
The women opened with a win in the 200 free relay. Waters, whose brilliance in the 50 free would be on display later in the night, led a foursome that included Emily Trautner, Kathy Qu and Courtney Kilkuts to a winning time of 1:35.51.
Senior co-captain Alicia Aemisegger set a pool record in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:38.54. That time barely missed an NCAA A-cut by .08 of a second. Junior Nicole McAndrew continued the strong start to her season with a second-place time of 4:52.39. Fellow Princeton co-captain Courtney Kilkuts won her specialty, the 200 IM, in a time of 2:01.88. Freshman Sarah Furgatch added a third-place finish in 2:05.61.
Waters put on a show in the 50 free, breaking her own school record with a winning time of 22.87. She added a third win during the evening when she led off the victorious 400 medley relay team (Furgatch, Aemisegger, Kilkuts) to a winning time of 3:46.15.
Princeton went 2-3 on the three-meter board, as junior Carolyn Littlefield (265.35) and freshman Bryan Tsai (243.15) placed just behind Rider's Amanda Burke.
The Princeton men won the 200 free in 1:24.13, as the team of Geoff Faux, Will Lawley, Michael Monovoukos and Christopher Quemena edged LaSalle's 'A' relay by .06 of a second.
Princeton earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free. Junior Colin Hanna won the event in 4:30.30, while junior Patrick Biggs (4:33.05) and sophomore Travis McNamara (4:38.87) took the next two spots. Tiger sophomore Jonathan Christensen held off Quemena to win the 200 IM in 1:49.48.
Monovoukos placed fourth in the 50 free in 21.10, but Princeton came right back and won the 400 medley relay. The team of Kaspar Raigla, Christensen, Brett Lullo and Jonathan Hartmann won the event in 3:22.99. The Tigers also got third- and fourth-place diving finishes on the one-meter board from Daniel Dickerson (291.50) and Stephen Vines (283.80), respectively.
