Swim/Dive Teams Build On Leads At Bucknell Invitational
December 06, 2009 | Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton men's and women's swimming and diving teams built on their sizable day one leads in the middle session of the 2009 Bucknell Open Saturday. A clean sweep for the women and a handful of wins for the men assured both teams a lead of more than 350 points with one day remaining.
The Princeton men have 1171 points, while Brown is second with 754 and Bucknell is third with 729 points. The Princeton women have 1261 points, while host Bucknell is second with 898 and Brown is third with 757.5 points.
The men's 200 free relay team of Kaspar Raigla, Jonathan Christensen, Michael Monovoukos and Geoffrey Faux placed second in time of 1:32.87, but junior Colin Hanna put the Tigers back on the winning side quickly by taking the 400 IM in 3:56.51.
Monovoukos placed third in the 100 fly in a time of 50.70, while senior tri-captain Quemena won the 200 free in 1:40.46. Teammates Will Lawley and Hartmann took two of the next three spots in the 200 free. Christensen won the 100 breast in 55.14, while Raigla won the B final of the 100 back in 52.56. The team of Christensen, Lawley, Quemena and Hartmann finished the swimming portion of the day by winning the 800 free relay in a time of 6:44.53.
The men's diving competition ended Saturday with freshman Stevie Vines winning the three-meter competition with 336.65 points.
The Princeton women opened with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Megan Waters, Sarah Furgatch, Alicia Aemisegger and Courtney Kilkuts won the event in 143.97. Aemisegger followed with a brilliant performance in her specialty, the 400 IM. The Tiger co-captain and 10-time All-America honoree posted a winning time of 4:06.62, which was more than 17 seconds faster than anybody in the field. The A-cut time is Aemisegger's fastest in an early-season race and is likely to be a national Top-3 time by the end of the weekend. Furgatch placed second in the event with a lifetime-best time of 4:24.49.
Freshman Carter Stephens won the 100 fly in 56.29, topping junior Nicole McAndrew, who placed second in 57.67. Sophomore Aislinn Smalling edged teammate Ming Ong to win the 200 free in 1:51.58; Ong took second in 1:51.90. Senior co-captain Courtney Kilkuts followed with a win in the 100 breast in 1:03.31.
Junior Megan Waters, who broke the Princeton record in the 50 free on Friday, broke a second school record Saturday. Her winning time in the 100 back of 54.74 topped Meredith Monroe's 2008 team record and was another indication of the depth of this Princeton squad.
The 800 free relay of Furgatch, Ong, Smalling and Aemisegger won in a time of 7:26.99, while the team of Lauren Benjamin, Stephens, Kathy Qu and McAndrew took third in 7:44.43.
Both the men's and women's teams will finish the competition Sunday at Bucknell.
