Women's Hoops Begins Four-Game Road Swing Through New England

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/18/09) ? The Princeton University women's basketball hits the road this weekend in a four-game road swing through New England. The Tigers will face Harvard on Friday, Feb. 20 and Dartmouth on Saturday, Feb. 21. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Princeton improved to 9-12 on the season after splitting with Yale and Brown. The Tigers lost a one-possession game to Yale before cruising to a 25-point win over Brown the next day. Princeton is 4-3 in league play, sitting in third place. Sophomore Addie Micir leads the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game and is the team's best three-point shooter averaging 36.6 percent from long range, and best free-throw shooter draining 87 percent of her chances. Senior Whitney Downs and freshman Lauren Edwards are contributing 9.8 and 9.1 points per game, and are the team's top steals leaders with 34 and 25, respectively. Freshman Devona Allgood leads the team on the glass with 6.5 rebounds per game and also has a team-high 28 blocks while chipping in 7.1 points per game. Senior Julia Berger is second in the rebounding column with 4.3 boards per game, while junior Cheryl Stevens is second in blocks with 23. Senior Jessica Berry leads the team in assists with 55, while Micir has 44.
Dartmouth has a 42-19 edge over Princeton in the all-time series, which dates back to 1977. The Big Green have won the last three games, including a 71-67 overtime game on Jan. 30. The last time Princeton won at Leede Arena was Feb. 24, 2006.
Dartmouth leads the Ivy League with a perfect 7-0 mark and are 12-9 overall. The Big Green are 4-3 when they play at home. Brittney Smith is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, with 13.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per game. Smith also has a team-high 32 blocks and has 34 steals and 33 assists. Koren Schram is contributing 12.0 points per game and leads the team in assists with 51 and steals with 51. Darcy Rose is chipping in 8.2 points per game and 64 boards per game. Schram is the team's top three-point shooter with 47 baskets from long range. Margaret Smith and Meghan McFee are both shooting over 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Dartmouth is 7-0 when playing against common opponents on Princeton's schedule, while the Tigers are 5-2. Both teams defeated Stony Brook, Penn, Brown, Cornell, Columbia. Dartmouth earned additional wins over Harvard and Yale, while Princeton lost those two games.
Harvard leads Princeton, 36-27 in the all-time series that began in 1974. The Crimson have recorded wins in the last five games including a 82-73 win in late January. The Tigers last win at Lavietes Pavilion on Feb. 25, 2006.
Harvard is in second place in the Ivy League standings, just ahead of Princeton with a 5-2 mark. Overall the team is 13-8 and is 4-3 when playing at home. Emma Markley leads the team in scoring with 13.6 points per game and in rebounds with 7.3 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in blocks with 34. Brogan Berry is adding 11.5 points per game and Emily Tay is putting in 11.4 points per game. Tay has a team-high 110 assists and a team-high 40 steals. Berry and Niki Finelli are the team's top free throw and three-point shooters.
Princeton and Harvard have matching records against similar opponents, at 4-2. Both teams have swept Penn, Brown and Cornell. Princeton defeated Columbia while Harvard lost, and Harvard beat Yale while Princeton fell to the Bulldogs.
