February 28, 2009 | General, Women's Basketball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (2/27/09) ? Three players were in double digits led by sophomore Addie Micir who had 13 points to give Princeton a 61-38 win over Brown in women's basketball on Friday, Feb. 27 at Pizzitola Sports Center.
“This was a game in which everyone contributed,” Coach Banghart said. “In the second half we were able to focus offensively and were defensively sound. We talked about how if we play as a team we're going to be tough to beat. We wanted to play as a five-person unit, and Brown wants you to play one-on-one.”
Brown started the game taking a 4-1 lead before a three-pointer by Micir evened the game at 16:56. A layup by freshman Lauren Edwards 30 seconds later gave the Tigers a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
Princeton added three more buckets to make it 12-4 with 13:57 to play in the half. The teams would both score 13 points apiece in the next 10 minutes to make it 25-18 with just over two minutes to play. The Tigers rattled off two more baskets and the team's split free throws to give Princeton a 29-19 advantage at the half.
The Tigers held the Bears scoreless for the opening five minutes of the second half, and went on a 12-0 run to take a 22-point lead. Christina Johnson ended Brown's drought when she dropped in a free throw at 14:42.
Princeton would take its largest lead of the game, 40-23, just over a minute later. The 23-point deficit jolted the Bears into gear as they scored 16 of the game's next 20 points to cut the lead back to 11, 47-36 with four minutes to play. After Downs and Micir both went 2-for-2 at the free-throw line Brown's shooting went cold, going 1-for-5 in the final three minutes. Princeton added 10 more points, getting five from the field and five from the free-throw line to seal the 61-38 win.
In addition to Micir's 13 points, Edwards and senior Whitney Downs each scored 10 points. Senior Julia Berger led the team on the glass with six rebounds and had a team-high three assists. Classmate Jessica Berry had a team-best three steals and freshman Devona Allgood and junior Cheryl Stevens had two blocks each. As a team, Princeton shot 47.6 percent from the floor, 80 percent from the foul line and 31.3 percent from behind the arc.
Sadiea Williams paced the Bears with 13 points and had seven rebounds. Karly Grace had nine points and Amy Ehrhart had six points and a team-high eight rebounds. Courtney Lee had a team-best four assists and three steals. As a team, Brown shot 26.4 percent from the field, 53.8 percent from the free throw line and 27.3 percent from the long range. Brown won the rebound battle, 35-32.
Princeton improves to 10-14 overall and 5-5 in the Ivy League, while Brown falls to 3-22 and 1-10 in league play.
The Tigers will travel to Yale for a 7 p.m., game tomorrow night. The Bulldogs defeated Penn, 61-51, earlier this evening.
