Princeton Women's Basketball to Take Part in WBCA Pink Zone
February 03, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (2/3/09) ? The Princeton University women's basketball team will be taking part in the WBCA Pink Zone on Friday, Feb. 13 when it hosts Yale at 7 p.m.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone?, formerly known as "Think Pink," in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Last year, more than 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising nearly $1 million for breast cancer awareness and research.
In addition to the Tigers wearing pink uniforms for the game, the coaching staff and cheer squad will all be wearing pink. Pink Zone t-shirts will be available for purchase for $15 with all proceeds going to local and national breast cancer organizations. All fans wearing pink to the game will gain free admission.
Other activities and promotions planned for the event include: free coffee, pink cupcakes and cookies provided by Princeton Dining Services.
Commemorative pink towels will also be handed out, courtesy of the Princeton University Women's Center.
At halftime, members of the audience who have been affected by breast cancer will be asked to come down to the court and form a human ribbon at center court.
Jadwin Gym will open for fans at 6 p.m. and the Tigers hope to have a record crowd on hand to participate in such an important event.
Locally, Princeton has teamed up with Princeton HealthCare System's Breast Health Center, the YWCA Princeton's Breast Cancer Resource Center, Princeton Against Cancer Together (PACT), UBS and Stonebridge at Montgomery senior living community. The aforementioned groups will have tables set up in Jadwin to provide additional information about their organizations as well as information about breast cancer. At the national level, the WBCA is partnering with the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, named for the longtime North Carolina State women's basketball coach who lost her battle with breast cancer on January 24, 2009.
