Women's Basketball Heads to the Empire State

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/4/09) ? The Princeton women's basketball team travels to New York to take on Cornell and Columbia this weekend. The Tigers take on the Big Red on Friday, Feb. 6 and the Lions on Saturday, Feb. 7. Both games begin at 7 p.m.

Princeton is 6-11 overall and 1-2 in the Ivy League after dropping two matches last weekend. The Tigers fell to Dartmouth in overtime by four points and to Harvard the next day by nine. Sophomore Addie Micir leads the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game and has the best free throw percentage and three-point percentage, at 87.5 and 39.0 percent respectively. Freshman Lauren Edwards is the team's second leading scorer, averaging 10 points per game. The Ivy League Rookie of the Week Devona Allgood leads the team in rebounds, with 6.3 boards per game and has a team-high 23 blocks. Senior Whitney Downs has 27 steals while classmate Jessica Berry has 40 assists, both team highs.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Cornell, 36-20. The Tigers are hoping to put a stop on the Big Red's four-game win streak in the series. The last time Princeton won was a 76-63 contest in January 2006. Princeton is 14-13 when visiting Ithaca, N.Y.
Cornell is on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Brown and Yale on the road last weekend. The Big Red defeated Brown by 12 and Yale by 15. Cornell is 7-9 overall 3-1 in the Ivy League, after splitting with Columbia. Shanna Scarselletta is the team's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 12.9 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in blocks with 11. Allie Fedorowicz is chipping in 10.7 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game and has a team-high 15 steals. Lauren Benson has a team-best 71 assists and is contributing 10.3 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game. Fedorowicz and Benson have matching 75 percent ratings from the free-throw line, and Fedorowicz and Virginia McMunigal are also the top two three-point shooters on the team.
Columbia splits its games last weekend, falling to Yale, 63-61 before handing Brown a 76-51 loss. The squad is 9-9 on the season and 2-2 in league play. Judie Lomax does it all for the Lions, putting up 14 points per game and just under 14 rebounds per game. Of her 250 rebounds, more than half have come on the defensive end, at 149. In addition, she has 32 assists and 18 steals but is shooting just 53.6 percent from the free-throw line. As a team, the Big Red have connected on 67.2 percent of their free throws. Danielle Browne is contributing 9.3 points per game and has a team-high 28 steals and 62 assists. Browne and Katrina Cragg are the two players most likely to take the ball to the outside. Lauren Dwyer has a team-best 22 blocks and adds 8.6 points per game. Sara Yee also has impressive numbers for the secondary statistics column with 25 steals and 36 helpers.
