February 06, 2009 | Women's Basketball
ITHACA, N.Y. (2/6/09) ? Princeton senior Whitney Downs scored a team-high 19 points in a 75-56 win over Cornell in women's basketball on Friday, Feb. 6 at Newman Arena. The Tigers' 19-point win is the biggest margin of victory against an Ivy League opponent since the 2004-05 season.
“Beating the 2008 Ivy League Champion in their home gym after two heartbreaking losses shows the resolve of this team,” Coach Banghart said. “We won when Addie and Lauren, two of our leading scorers, didn't put up any numbers. I'm proud of our team effort.”
Freshmen Laura Johnson and Devona Allgood each collected 11 points, and sophomore Addie Micir led the team on the glass with six rebounds. Senior Jessica Berry and Johnson each contributed three assists in the game. Ten of the 13 players that entered the game scored two or more points, as the squad shot 49.2 percent from the field. Princeton shot 78.6 percent from the free-throw line and 40 percent from behind the arc.
Princeton grabbed a
one-point lead off a Julia Berger basket at 16:42 and the Tigers wouldn't relinquish their lead.
Cornell wouldn't hit a basket for nearly five minutes as Princeton gained a 12-5 lead. The teams traded runs in the next 10 minutes with Princeton going ahead by as much as 10 and Cornell coming within four. With three minutes to play in the half, the score stood at 31-27. Downs drained a three-pointer and dropped in a lay-up to put Princeton up by eight. Allgood put back a basket with six seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 37-27 lead headed into the locker rooms.
Downs led the team in scoring with 12 points in the first half, as the Tigers shot 51.6 percent from the field and held Cornell to 36 percent.
The Tigers went on a 5-1 run to the start the second, 43-28 before Cornell held the squad scoreless and went on a 7-0 run to make it a seven-point game at 13:25. A minute later, Cornell was still clinging to the seven-point deficit before Allgood, Johnson and Downs combined for seven points in two minutes to help the Tigers regain their 15-point lead, 52-37 at 10:39. Three minutes later Allgood picked up an old-fashioned three-point play to give Princeton its largest lead of the game, 58-42.
Princeton drained three balls, two from Johnson and one from Micir, from long range en route to grabbing a 20-point lead at 3:31.
After a three from Cornell, Princeton went on an 8-0 run to take a 25-point lead with 1:47 remaining. The Tigers put in some of their reserves and Cornell scored six to give Princeton a 75-56 win.
Lauren Benson led the Big Red with nine points and four assists. Allie Munson, Christine Vlasic and Allie Fedorowicz each contributed eight points. Munson led the team in rebounds with six and Fedorowicz had five. The Big Red shot 37 percent from the field, 46.7 from long range and 60 percent from the charity stripe.
“You have to have a short memory in the Ivy League, every road win in the league is a good one,” Banghart said. “Columbia is an athletic team that plays really hard, just like us, so we'll have to be even better tomorrow night.”
Princeton improves to 7-11 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League, while Cornell falls to 7-10 overall and 3-2 in the league. The Tigers will take on Columbia in New York City tomorrow, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
