Women's Basketball Sweeps Ivy Awards

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/9/09) - The Princeton women's basketball team swept the Ivy League weekly awards the league announced on Monday, Feb. 9. Senior Whitney Downs was named co-Player of the Week while Devona Allgood captured Rookie of the Week.
Downs led Princeton in scoring as it posted a weekend sweep of Cornell and Columbia on the road. Downs scored a team-high 19 points against the Big Red as she shot 7-for-8 from the field, including knocking down three three pointers. She added two rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. The next day, Downs had a perfect game against Columbia, as she scored on every attempt. She scored 11 points in just 17 minutes of play. She added two rebounds, two assists and a block and a steal each. For the weekend, Downs shot 91.7 percent (11-12) from the field, 100 percent from behind the arc (4-4) and missed just two of her six free throws.
Allgood was the second leading scorer with 25 points and had nine rebounds. Against Cornell, Allgood scored 11 points in 18 minutes and added three rebounds, two blocks and a steal. The following night she was one of three Tigers to record a team-high 14 points against Columbia. She chipped in six rebounds and one assist and one steal.
Princeton's 19-point win over Cornell on Friday was the Tigers largest margin of victory over an Ivy League opponent since the 2004-05 season. It was Feb. 25, 2005 when Princeton recorded a 72-53 win over Columbia. This was also Princeton's first time sweeping an Ivy League weekend on the road in three years when it took down Dartmouth and Harvard in late February 2006.
Princeton moves up to third in the league standings with a 3-2 mark. With an 8-11 overall record, the Tigers have already succeeded last season's win total with five weeks left to play.
