March 15, 2009 | Women's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES -- The Princeton women's water polo team was swept on Sunday on the second day of games at the LMU Invitational. Princeton fell 10-4 to Cal State Bakersfield in the opener and then lost 13-5 to host Loyola Marymount in the day's second game.
In the opener, Call State Bakersfield used four straight goals to blow open a one-goal game and pull away from the Princeton women's water polo team in a 10-4 win on Sunday morning at the LMU Invitational. Princeton will take on the host Lions late Sunday afternoon.
The Roadrunners scored the first two goals of the game and led 2-0 after eight minutes of play. Senior Claire Jacobson scored for Princeton within the first minute of the second quarter to cut the lead to a goal, but CSUB scored the final four goals of the period to build up a 6-1 lead at the half.
Junior Phoebe Champion scored two Tiger goals in the third quarter and freshman Cayley Bowles added one in the fourth, but the Tigers could not draw closer and the Roadrunners pulled off the 10-4 win. Freshman Kristen Ward made eight saves in the loss.
In Princeton's second game, the Tigers led 2-1 three minutes into the game tanks to goals from Champion and sophomore Tanya Wilcox, but LMU scored four straight goals to close out the quarter and never trailed from that point on. LMU stretched out its lead to 9-3 by the half and 13-4 after three quarters.
Princeton's five goals came from five scorers as Jacobson, junior Helen Meigs and freshman Audrey Zak also added goals. Sophomore Christina Michel made four saves in the loss.
Princeton is now 9-6 overall and continues its Spring Break trip Tuesday at Concordia.
