Midweek Contests at St. Mary's, San Jose State to Start Spring Break for Softball Tigers
March 17, 2009 | Softball
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- After eight days away from competition, the Princeton softball team will get back on the field at St. Mary's and San Jose State to start its seven-game California spring break trip.
The Tigers played one day of a season-opening tournament in Chattanooga, splitting a pair of games before the rest of the weekend was lost to rain. The following weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C., Princeton defeated Elon and Georgetown before dropping a one-run game to Michigan State and losing to the host Tar Heels.
That brings Princeton into this week's games with a record of 3-3. Following a 2 p.m. Pacific Time game Tuesday at St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif., the Tigers will visit San Jose State at 1 p.m. PT doubleheader Wednesday.
The Gaels are 8-12 following a sweep of Northern Illinois last Thursday. St. Mary's, a member of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, have five players hitting above .300, led by junior infielder Katherine Delpit at .369. Princeton swept a doubleheader at St. Mary's in 2005 and split one the following year in the only times the teams have met.
San Jose State, a Western Athletic Conference member, will have its first meeting with Princeton this week. The Spartans, at 9-17 entering the week, will meet another team making a long trip west against Canisius Tuesday before facing the Tigers. San Jose State is batting .238 as a team with five players hitting at or above .300. SJSU has started 19 players during the season and has a four-member pitching staff that has a collective ERA of 3.38.
The Tigers are hitting .299 as a team and have three players at or above .400 at the plate. Sophomore Kristin Arguedas has the highest average at .438, while Kathryn Welch (.435) leads the team with 10 hits and seven RBIs. Sophomore Michelle Tolfa and junior Jamie Lettire have split the pitching duties for Princeton, with Tolfa tossing 27 of the team's 39 innings.
Princeton will continue its spring break with five games in a Stanford-hosted tournament Friday through Sunday against the host Cardinal as well as Winthrop (twice), Pacific and Santa Clara.
