CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Princeton baseball team finally got onto the field Tuesday afternoon after rain washed away the first five games of its Spring Break trip. The only problem was the field belonged to the nation's top-ranked team as No. 1 North Carolina one-hit the Tigers in a 17-0 win at Boshamer Stadium.
The Tigers fell behind early as UNC jumped on Princeton for five runs over the first three innings, including two in the first inning. The Tar Heels added three that were unearned in the third inning and put up seven in the sixth on three home runs?a grand slam, a two-run shot and a solo homer.
The Tigers were held hitless through seven and two-thirds of an inning before sophomore Greg Van Horn broke up the no-hit bid with a single to center field in the eighth. Van Horn also walked twice in the game.
Six Tigers pitched in the loss, with no pitcher going more than two and a third as the Tigers looked to get several pitchers work having missed five games in the last three days.
Sophomore Dan Barnes, who started the game and gave up two runs, took the loss. Princeton is now 3-3 overall this season and faces the Tar Heels again tomorrow at 3 p.m.
