Quist Hits First Homer, but Softball Tigers Fall 7-6 in Extras at Saint Mary?s
March 18, 2009 | Softball
Princeton (3-4) fell behind early but came back to take a 4-2 lead in the fourth, scoring in three straight innings. Megan Weidrick, Kristin Arguedas, Brittney Scott and Collette Abbott each had an RBI during the stretch.
The lead only lasted an inning, however, as the Gaels' Lauren Clark tied it with a two-out double in the fifth.
After two scoreless innings, Kathryn Welch started the Princeton eighth with a hit and Quist followed it with a two-run shot to the deepest part of the Gaels' home field over the 220-foot sign in center to put the Tigers ahead 6-4.
Saint Mary's (9-12) struck again with two outs, this time when Jenna Smith's two run single fell inside the left-field line to push the tying runs across in the eighth. After a scoreless Princeton ninth in which a leadoff walk to Kelsey VandeBergh was left stranded, the Gaels' Katelyn LaRussa brought home the winning run with a one-out base hit.
The first six Saint Mary's runs all came with two outs despite Michelle Tolfa's yeoman effort in the circle. The sophomore threw all 8 1/3 innings, tossing 158 pitches.
Both teams were guilty of missed opportunities, with 14 Tigers stranded on base to 12 for the Gaels. Nine of Princeton's stranded runners were in scoring position.
Princeton will have another midweek contest Wednesday in a doubleheader at San Jose State.
