March 24, 2009 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- Rutgers jumped to an early lead and kept the Princeton baseball team at bay in a 10-7 win on Tuesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Sophomore Greg Van Horn had two hits and drove in three runs in the loss.
Following two scoreless innings, Rutgers built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth. In the third inning Jaren Matthews delivered a two-out double to plate a pair of runs. An inning later, Matthews hit a two-run single as Rutgers plated four runs on two hits, a Princeton error and three hit batters.
Princeton cut the lead in half with three runs in the sixth inning. Senior Derek Beckman singled and then walks to senior Dan DeGeorge and Van Horn loaded the bases with no outs. Junior jack Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to score Beckman and junior Brian Berkowitz singled home the other two runs.
The teams then traded two runs in the seventh and eighth inning as Princeton could get no closer than within three of Rutgers. In the Rutgers seventh, a triple and two doubles plated two runs, but the Tigers got both back in the bottom half of the inning as a run scored on an error and Van Horn singled one in.
Rutgers extended the lead to five runs in the top of the ninth as Vinnie Sangemino plated a run with a sac fly and another run scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth as Van Horn delivered a two-run double.
Rutgers starter Kyle Bradley got the win. He allowed three runs on three hits in five innings. The loss went to junior Langford Stuber, who is now 2-1.
Princeton fell to 7-6 with the loss while Rutgers is now 9-11. The Tigers begin Ivy League play this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday against Yale.
