Swim Quartet Claims All-America Honors; Lennox Eyes NCAA Title
March 27, 2009 | Men's Swimming and Diving
The men's swimming quartet of Doug Lennox, Mike Carter, Colin Cordes and Jon Hartmann opened the 2009 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championship meet in College Station, Texas, by earning All-America honors in the 200 free relay. Lennox is hoping to build on that Saturday with a much higher spot on the medal stand.
The opening day of the championship session saw four Princeton swimmers compete individually and the entire team of six compete in two relays. The opening relay was the 200 free, and Princeton clinched All-America honors by finishing 12th in the preliminary session with a time of 1:18.28. The foursome would not be able to build on that time and ended up going 1:19.00 in the final, where it finished 16th, but All-America honorable mention had been wrapped up by then.
Both Jon Hartmann and Will Schaffer competed in the first individual event of the day, the 200 IM. Hartmann placed 53rd in the event (1:48.64), while Schaffer, the 2009 Ivy League champion in the event, was disqualified in his preliminary heat. In the 50 free, Lennox placed 31st in 19.72, while Carter placed 49th in 20.05; Ivy League champion Alex Righi of Yale placed fifth in the championship final.
In the 400 medley relay, Princeton needed a Top-16 finish to earn All-America honors and score in the team competition, but the foursome of Lennox, Schaffer, Dan Eckel and Carter placed 19th in 3:16.58.
Friday will feature a full slate of events, but Tiger eyes will be fixed on the 100 fly. Lennox won the Ivy League title in the event with a time of 45.12, which is currently the third-fastest time in the country. Lennox, a 2008 Olympian as a member of the Puerto Rico national team, earned All-America honors last year when he finished fourth overall in the 200 fly. Lennox, along with Eckel, both qualified for Saturday's 200 fly competition with NCAA A-cut times.
