Baseball Opens Ivy Season This Weekend With Yale and Brown

The Princeton baseball team opens the 2009 Ivy League season this weekend as it hosts doubleheaders at home against Yale and Brown. The Tigers enter the Ivy season with a 7-6 record.
Princeton finished its Spring Break trip last weekend with a 4-3 record. The Tigers completed the weeklong trip by taking three of four games at Navy. Princeton also played once during the week, dropping a 10-7 game at the hands of local-rival Rutgers.
The loss brought Princeton to 7-6 overall, but Princeton remained above .500, marking the first time since 2004 and the third time the a Scott Bradley coached Princeton team has entered the Ivy campaign with a record at or above. 500.
Sophomore Greg Van Horn continues to lead the Tigers offense as he leads the team with a .472 batting average. The shortstop ranks second on the team with 17 hits and 12 RBIs, despite missing a handful of games due to injury. He is one of four Tigers batting above .300 this season and is joined there by senior leadoff hitter Derek Beckman at .360, junior DH David Hale at .349 and junior outfielder Jon Broscious. Beckman has a team-high 13 runs scored, while Hale and Broscious are tied for third in the team in RBIs. Princeton RBI leader is junior Brian Berkowitz, who has plated 14 runs this season.
Princeton got three wins from its starters last weekend as Hale, senior Brad Gemberling and sophomore David Palms each picked up wins at Navy. Hale continued his strong start to the season and has yet to allow an earned run in 13 innings this season. The reigning Ivy League Pitcher of the Week shutout Navy last Saturday. Palms also had a solid outing, allowing just one earned in eight innings for a win on Sunday.
Princeton will look to begin the Ivy season strong against Yale on Saturday. The Tigers will send Hale and Gemberling to the mound against the Bulldogs. Yale is 4-7 overall this season and enters the weekend following a 4-3 midweek loss to Connecticut and the Bulldogs split at Holy Cross last weekend. Last season Princeton and Yale split a doubleheader in New Haven.
The Tigers complete the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday against Brown as the Tigers will send junior Langford Stuber and Palms to the hill. Brown enters Ivy play at 3-10 overall entering Saturday's doubleheader at Cornell. The Bears have been in California for Spring Break and picked up wins at San Diego and Pepperdine. Brown was swept by USC on Wednesday.
