Baseball Travels to William & Mary for Weekend Series
March 05, 2009 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team returns to action this weekend with a four-game series at William & Mary. Last weekend rain washed away two of the team's schedule three games, but with forecasts clear with temperatures in the 70s, the Tigers hope to get all four in this weekend.
Last weekend, Princeton made the trip to UNC Greensboro for a three-game series. The teams played their game scheduled for Friday but weather caused the cancelation of games on Saturday and Sunday. In the Tigers one game, they fell 6-5 to the Spartans in walk-off fashion as UNCG broke a tie game in the final at-bat.
Senior Dan DeGeorge had three hits in the game, while sophomore Greg Van Horn and junior Jack Murphy each drove in a pair of runs. Murphy's came on a two-run homer while Van Horn plated two with a double. Senior Derek Beckman had two hits as well and scored two runs in the game.
On the mound, senior Brad Gemberling did not allow an earned run in four innings of work. Sophomore Dan Barnes then took over and surrendered two earned in three innings while striking out five. Sophomore Matt Grabowski pitched this final inning-and-a-third. He allowed one run and was tagged with the loss.
Barnes will start the first game of this weekend's series, with Gemberling and junior David Hale pitching both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. Junior Langford Stuber will start Sunday's series finale. Here's a look at the weekend's projected match-ups.
Friday - Dan Barnes (0-0, 6.00 ERA) vs.Cole Shain (1-0, 6.00 ERA)
Saturday Game 1 ? David Hale (First Appearance) vs. Jeremy Neustifter (1-1, 12.91 ERA)
Saturday Game 2 ? Brad Gemberling (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Tim Norton (0-1, 27.00 ERA)
Sunday ? Langford Stuber (First Appearance) vs. Chris Yates (0-0, 13.50 ERA)
As a result of the cancelation of the series, the Tigers had two open dates on the schedule that have now been replaced with mid-week games later in the season. Princeton will now host Rider on April 7 at Clarke Field and visit Rider on April 28.
This weekend the Tigers play four games at William & Mary. The Tribe is currently 3-4 after dropping a game on Wednesday at VMI. The Tribe has wins over Buffalo and Iona this season, with losses to Miami (Ohio), Virginia, Buffalo and VMI. The Tribe is batting .286 as a team and has a 7.80 team ERA.
