Softball Splits Pair of One-Run Games in North Carolina
March 07, 2009 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Princeton split two games at the Tar Heel Invitational in North Carolina Saturday, defeating Elon 7-6 but falling late to Michigan State 5-4.
Princeton (3-2) will face North Carolina Sunday at 11 a.m. in the final game of the four-game tournament in its final contest before the spring trip to California.
In Saturday's opener against Elon (4-7), Kristin Arguedas had a two-RBI double in the sixth inning to put the Tigers ahead for good, but only after Princeton lost leads twice and fought back ahead.
Each team scored a pair of runs in the second inning and three runs apiece in the fourth. Elon pulled ahead 6-5 with a run in the fifth, but Arguedas one-out double in Princeton's next at-bat plated Kathryn Welch and Jamie Lettire for the go-ahead runs.
Michelle Tolfa (2-1) got the win in relief, tossing three innings with three hits and a walk allowed.
Princeton led Michigan State (7-6) 3-0 on a three-run home run by Welch in the third, but four Spartan runs in the bottom of the fourth put Michigan State ahead. Each team added a solo shot in the sixth, with Lettire doing the honors for Princeton, but Lauren Kramer's round-tripper proved to be the game-winner for the Big Ten squad.
Tolfa tossed a complete game in the nightcap with seven hits and two walks.
