Edwards Records Double-Double as Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight
March 08, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/7/09) ? It was Senior Night at Jadwin Gym but it was freshman Lauren Edwards that paved the way for the women's basketball team to earn a 76-55 win over Cornell on Saturday, March 7. Edwards recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in front of a crowd more than 1,200.
Five minutes into the game, the score stood at 8-8, with all of Cornell's points coming from Shanna Scarselletta. Princeton took care of that offensive threat, limiting her to just five more points the rest of the game.
The Tigers went on a 17-7 run over the next 6:37 to gain a 10-point lead, 25-15 with seven minutes to play in the first half. The Big Red responded with a run of its own, scoring 15 of the next 21 points, seven of which came from the free throw line, to make it a one-point game, 31-30 with 3:26 to play. Princeton added five more points to its total while Cornell tallied two more from the charity stripe to end the first half, 36-32.
At the end of the half, Edwards had already collected 12 points and senior Whitney Downs had nine. Thirteen of Princeton's 36 points came via second-chance points as the squad picked up 12 offensive boards to Cornell's five. The Tigers also got 22 points from their bench, while Cornell couldn't get any help from the pine.
Princeton started the second on an 8-2 run to work its way back up to a 10-point lead, 44-34 at 16:06. Four minutes later the Tigers had a 52-40 lead with senior Jessica Berry scoring half of the team's points during that span. Once again it was sharp foul shooting that kept the Big Red in the game, scoring four of its six from the line.
The Tigers continued to pad the lead with a 14-4 run to make it 66-44 with 4:10 left on the clock. With 2:38 to play, Princeton maintained its 22-point lead.
A three-pointer by senior Caitlin O'Neill at 2:19 had the fans on their feet as the shot hit the rim bounced up and dropped in to make it 72-48. A jumper by sophomore Shelbie Pool with two to play gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game, a 26-point edge, 74-48.
Cornell finished out the game scoring seven points, while Princeton got a bucket from junior Tani Brown to set the score at 76-55.
Eleven different Tigers made their way into the stats sheet with a basket or more. Downs finished the game with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Berry had eight points and a team-high four assists. Micir matched those eight points while pulling down seven boards and a team-high three blocks. Freshman Devona Allgood picked up nine rebounds and had two blocks.
At the end of the night Princeton shot 44.3 percent from the field and won the rebound battle 48-40. The Tigers had a 43-2 edge on in bench points and had 20 second-chance points to Cornell's six.
Scarselletta and Allie Fedorowicz contributed 18 points apiece and Lauren Benson had 11. Virginia McMunigal led the team under the basket with nine rebounds while Christin Vlasic had seven.
Princeton improves to 13-14 on the season and 8-5 in the Ivy League, while Cornell drops to 10-16 and 6-8 in league play.
The Tigers close out the regular season at Penn on Tuesday, March 10 at 5:30 p.m.
