Women's Basketball Names Captains at Annual Banquet
April 01, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (3/30/09) ? The Princeton women's basketball team held its annual banquet on Saturday, March 30 to celebrate its 2008-2009 season.
The team celebrated many personal, individual, and team accomplishments. They celebrated their significant improvement and the momentum they feel in moving this program forward. They highlighted the sweep of four Ivy League teams (Cornell, Columbia, Brown, and Penn), a second-place finish in the league in scoring defense, leading the league in blocks and assists, and the placement of three players on the All-Ivy League roster.
Princeton finished its season 14-14 overall, with 11 of those losses to teams who played in the postseason. Predicted to finish seventh, the Tigers closed out the season in sole possession of third place in the standings with a 9-5 Ivy League record. Their five losses were by a combined 20 points.
Each of the four seniors, Julia Berger, Jessica Berry, Whitney Downs and Caitlin O'Neill shared her own special memories of Princeton basketball. A team highlight video and a special video made by the freshmen were shown as well.
The Herbert W. Hobler '44 Women's Basketball Award was awarded to seniors Julia Berger and Whitney Downs. The award is presented annually to that player who through her positive attitude, sportsmanship and consistent effort to improve her skills, contributes most to the team.
At the conclusion of the banquet, Head Coach Courtney Banghart named Tani Brown and Cheryl Stevens captains for the 2009-2010 season.
The Class of 2009 knows that they are leaving a program, to which they dedicated themselves to for four solid seasons, in good hands. And those they are leaving behind are motivated about playing for the past, the present, and the future of Princeton women's basketball.
