Baseball Visits Penn This Weekend for Gehrig Division Series
April 16, 2009 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team takes a season-long four-game win streak on the road this weekend against Penn for a four-game Gehrig Division series. The Tigers are tied for first place in the division with both Columbia and Cornell after taking three of four games from the Lions last week.
Columbia went 4-4 in the opening two weeks of play against the Rolfe Division, while Princeton and Cornell each went 2-6. Both teams erased that deficit with three wins last weekend at home. Cornell took three of four from Penn at home, while the Tigers took three from Columbia after losing the first game of the series.
As a result, the trio is all tied at 5-7 with eight games left. Princeton visits Penn for four games, then plays a home-and-home set with Cornell, while Columbia hosts Cornell this weekend and closes with a home-and-home against Penn. Meanwhile in the Rolfe Division, Dartmouth, at 11-1, holds a three-game lead over both Harvard and Brown.
Princeton enters the weekend winners of its last four for the first time this season. Princeton last won four straight to close the 2008 season. After falling to Columbia in the first game on Sunday, Princeton won the next three games against the Lions and then picked up a midweek win at Seton Hall.
Three Tigers batted above .400 for the week to help lead the Tiger offense. Sophomore Matt Connor led the group with seven hits in 14 at-bats for a .500 average. He also extended his current hit streak to eight games. Only senior Dan DeGeorge has had a longer streak this season. His streak of 12 was snapped in the first game against Columbia, but he has hit in three of the four games since. DeGeorge's .345 average currently leads the team.
Junior Jon Broscious also had a big week as he batted .471 with five extra-base hits and seven runs scored. He hit three home runs in the series against Columbia and now has hit five of his 12 career home runs against the Lions. Senior Derek Beckman also had a good week, batting .444 with eight hits, all singles.
On the mound, Princeton got three solid starts against Columbia as senior Brad Gemberling, sophomore David Palms and junior Langford Stuber recorded wins. Gemberling fanned a career-high 12 batters to improve to 4-1 on Sunday and is averaging 11.31 strikeouts per nine innings pitched, while Palms notched his second-straight complete-game win on Monday. Stuber went eight strong innings for the win on Monday as well.
Last season Princeton and Penn split four games at Clarke Field. The Tigers swept the opening day with Gemberling winning a 1-0 game in the opener as senior Adrian Turnham hit a solo homer, and took the nightcap 5-2 behind Christian Staehely's complete game. Penn rebounded the following day to win both games and split the series. The Quakers went ahead in the first game with an eight-run second inning and Princeton couldn't recover in a 10-7 loss. Then Penn took the nightcap with two runs in the eighth to snap a 3-3 game.
Penn is 11-19 overall and 1-11 in Ivy League play. The Quakers defeated La Salle 12-9 on Thursday afternoon. Penn went 0-8 against the Rolfe Division, and picked up its first Ivy win last weekend against Cornell.
