Football To Face Colgate Thursday, October 8, On ESPNU
April 16, 2009 | Football
For the first time in three seasons, Princeton won't play a Friday night football game. For the first time in 140 seasons, the Tigers will play a Thursday night game. In front of a national ESPNU audience, Princeton will host Colgate on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.; the last two Princeton-Colgate games have been decided on the final play.
The game, originally scheduled for October 10, has been moved to Thursday night to fit into the ESPNU schedule. Princeton is 2-1 all-time on ESPNU (which can also be found on DirecTV channel 614); the Tigers defeated Brown 14-3 during their 2006 Ivy League championship season and saw last year's Ivy rushing champion Jordan Culbreath have his breakout game in a 34-31 victory over Cornell in a 2007 showdown. Last season, third down issues on both offense and defense hurt the Tigers in a 14-9 loss to Penn.
"We're excited to be part of the ESPNU national schedule for the fourth consecutive year," head coach Roger Hughes said. "We think this is a great opportunity to showcase our program, our facilities, our loyal fans and this great university. Our last two games against Colgate have been decided on the final play, and we expect to give a national audience another exciting contest against a program we greatly respect."
This season's contest will be the 50th between Princeton and Colgate. The Tigers lead the all-time series 25-23-1, and the last two games have been among the most exciting in the rivalry. When Princeton won the 2006 Ivy League title, it went into the heart of the league season off a 27-26 overtime win at Colgate. Jeff Terrell's overtime touchdown run gave Princeton a 27-20 lead; Colgate followed with a touchdown and chose to go for two, but quarterback Mike Saraceno was tackled by Tom Methvin and John Callahan short of the goal line to preserve the victory.
Last season, Colgate pulled out a 27-24 victory on a 33-yard field goal from Jacob Stein with two seconds remaining. It ended a wild game that saw seven lead changes and a 153-yard rushing effort from Culbreath.
Most of the remaining game times will be determined over the summer and will be posted on GoPrincetonTigers.com.
The 2009 Princeton football Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at 2 p.m. Admission is free for the game, which will take place on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium. As usual, the 2009 captains will be announced that day and will lead the team on the field prior to the game.
