Champion's Overtime Goal Leads Women's Water Polo to Southern Title Game

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Phoebe Champion scored with 1:25 remaining in the second overtime to lift the Princeton women's water polo team to a 10-9 win over Bucknell in the semifinal round of the Southern Championships. Princeton will face Maryland for the Southern title at 7:30 p.m. this evening.
With the win Princeton avenged two losses to Bucknell in the regular season and advanced to Southern championship game for the sixth consecutive season. Additionally, Princeton assured itself a spot in next weekend's Eastern Championships, where the CWPA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament will be handed out.
Saturday morning's game was tight throughout as neither team was able to pull away during regulation. The teams were tied at the half and Bucknell held one-goal leads after the first and second quarters. Princeton took an 8-7 lead with 2:25 left to go in regulation, but Bucknell countered 33 seconds later and the game entered overtime tied at 8-8.
Each team scored in the first overtime session and Champion scored the lone goal of the second overtime period to lead the Tigers to victory. The goal came with 1:25 remaining and Princeton held off Bucknell over the final minute of play.
Junior Helen Meigs led Princeton with four goals in the win, while Champion and junior Carolina Ardila each added two goals. Freshman goalie Kristen Ward made 13 saves for the win.
