Softball Drops Doubleheader at Penn
April 18, 2009 | Softball
PHILADELPHIA -- Penn took two games from the Princeton softball team Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, winning 2-0 in the opener and 5-1 in game two. The losses drop Princeton to 13-17 overall and 7-7 in the Ivy League.
With the sweep and Cornell's split with Columbia Saturday, the Tigers fell to four games behind the Big Red with six to play.
In the opener, Princeton got just four hits off Penn (11-24-1, 6-8) starter Jesse Lupardus (7-6) and didn't advance a runner past second base. That nullified a two-run, six-hit start by Jamie Lettire (6-6), who held the Quakers scoreless until the fourth inning. Penn used a one-out single by Meg Kranse in that inning to score Kelsey Wolfe, and two innings later, Penn's top hitter Alisha Prystowsky had a two-out double to bring home Sarah Patrick for the game's final run.
In game two, Penn scored an unearned run against Michelle Tolfa (7-10) in the second inning before Princeton cashed in a walk to Brianna Moreno with a Kathryn Welch sacrifice fly in the third.
But that was all Princeton got against Emily Denstedt (2-7), who had her lead padded with a four-run fifth inning. Wolfe hit a two-run home run for the Quakers to bring home the final two runs.
The teams will play again Sunday in a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
