Baseball Faces Cornell Wednesday in Playoff Game; Tuesday Game at Rider Canceled
April 27, 2009 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team will visit Cornell on Wednesday afternoon
at 1 p.m. in a one-game playoff for the Gehrig Division crown. As a
result, Princeton's previously scheduled game on Tuesday at Rider has
been canceled.
Princeton and Cornell tied atop the Gehrig Division standings with identical 10-10 Ivy League records. The teams split their four league games and had identical records against each team in the division and were the same 2-6 against the Rolfe Division. The next tiebreaker is record against the first-place team in the Rolfe Division, which was Dartmouth. Both teams were swept by Dartmouth so it goes to record against Brown, the second-place Rolfe team. Cornell split with Brown, while the Bears swept Princeton. As a result, the playoff game will be played in Ithaca.
Princeton has played in two Gehrig Division playoff games since the Ivy League adopted the two-division format in 1993. The Tigers defeated Penn in those games in the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
The winner of Wednesday afternoon's game will advance to the best-of-three Ivy League Championship Series at Dartmouth.
