Tolfa Tosses One-Hitter in Softball's Split at Harvard
April 05, 2009 | Softball
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Michelle Tolfa picked up a one-hit shutout win as the Princeton softball team topped Harvard 1-0 in Sunday's doubleheader opener, but the Crimson bounced back in game two to win 5-2.
Tolfa (5-8) gave up five walks to go with the one hit and an other runner reaching on an error, but the sophomore stranded five runners, including four in scoring position, and erased two others on the base paths. Harvard's only hit was a one-out bunt single by Emily Henderson in the third.
Harvard's Rachel Brown took the loss despite giving up only two hits and two walks, striking out 10. The game's only run was unearned, when a fifth-inning leadoff single by Jamie Lettire was helped around by an outfield error off the bat of Kristin Arguedas and scored on a bunt by Brittney Scott.
The Crimson took the lead in game two and never relinquished it, scoring two runs off Princeton pitcher Lettire (3-5) in the first inning. After adding another in the third and another in the fifth to pull ahead 4-0, Harvard saw its lead halved when Princeton pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth, one scoring on a wild pitch and another on a single by Erin Miller.
Princeton got no closer after cutting it to 4-2, as the Crimson only widened its lead to the final margin with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Collette Abbott was 3 for 4 at the plate in the nightcap.
With the split, Princeton's record is now 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the Ivy, while Harvard moves to 19-9, 5-3.
