Baseball Hosts Columbia in Gehrig Division Opener
April 09, 2009 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team begins Gehrig Division play this weekend when Columbia visits Clarke Field for a pair of doubleheaders. The Tigers enter the weekend two games behind the Lions in the division standings.
Princeton sits 9-14 overall and 2-6 in the Ivy League. The Tigers played five times in the last week, being swept at Dartmouth, splitting at Harvard, and falling in a mid-week non-conference game to Rider.
The results have Princeton two games back of Columbia and within striking distance of Columbia in the Gehrig standings entering this weekend. The Lions are 4-4 in Ivy play, sweeping two Ivy League doubleheaders and being swept in two. Last weekend, the Lions took both at Yale, but dropped both at Columbia. The Lions as a result are two games up on both 2-6 Princeton and Cornell in the Gehrig standings and four games up on 0-8 Penn. Cornell and Penn meet this weekend in Ithaca. Meanwhile in the Rolfe Division, Dartmouth is atop the standings with an 8-0 record. Brown is a game back at 7-1. Harvard is 5-3 and Yale is 4-4.
Senior Dan DeGeorge has been Princeton's best hitter of late, batting .556 over his last six games with two doubles, two home runs, five RBIs and five runs scored. DeGeorge was named to Ivy League Honor Roll on Tuesday and carries a 10-game hit streak into the weekend.
The Tigers have six batters hitting better than .300 this season, led by DeGeorge at .361. The other five are sophomore Greg Van Horn ( .359), junior Jack Murphy (.318), junior David Hale (.307), junior Jon Broscious (.306) and senior Derek Beckman (.300).
Princeton will look for solid efforts on the mound from its usual rotation. Hale has a 3.46 ERA, the lowest of the four starters and will take the hill for the first game on Saturday, while senior Brad Gemberling, who leads the staff with three wins, will pitch Game 2. Sophomore David Palms, the winner on Sunday at Harvard will pitch Sunday's first game and junior Langford Stuber has Game 2.
Last season Princeton and Columbia split four games in New York. The Tigers swept the opening day with sophomore Dan Barnes winning the opener in relief and Christian Staehely winning the nightcap. Columbia bounced back the following day though to salvage the split by topping Hale and Barnes. Princeton and Columbia have split their last eight meetings. The last team to win the season series was Princeton, which won all four games on the road in the 2006 season.
Columbia is 7-21 overall and 4-4 in league play. The reigning Ivy League and Gehrig champions started the season with several games against ranked teams which have its recorded lopsided. Columbia is 5-6 since returning north and most recently topped Rutgers 9-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
