May 14, 2009 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Four Princeton softball players have been selected to the 2009 All-Ivy League teams, the league has announced.
Junior Collette Abbott was tabbed by the Ivy coaches as the first-team shortstop, making it nine straight years that Princeton has had a player on the first-team All-Ivy. Abbott hit .438 in the Ivy League season, including going 10 for 14 in the final series of the season against league champ Cornell to win the Ivy League Player of the Week honor. Abbott had a tremendous second half of the season, raising her average from .143 following a Mar. 28 doubleheader against Yale to .352 by season's end. Last season, Abbott was an all-league honorable mention.
Junior Jamie Lettire made it 3 for 3 on being selected to an All-Ivy team, taking the utility spot on the second-team All-Ivy as she did in 2007. Lettire was a first-team all-league honoree last season. Lettire finished with a .276 average that peaked at .308 on Apr. 18. Her eight home runs gave her 29 for her career, putting Lettire just one away from becoming the third Tiger in program history to hit 30 career home runs. Lettire was also a go-to pitcher for the Tigers when not at first base, throwing 102 innings over 21 appearances with a 7-8 record.
Junior Kelsey Quist and senior Kathryn Welch, who along with Lettire made up Princeton's big three home-run threats in 2008, maintained their all-league credentials this season with honorable mention status. Quist, a first-team all-league honoree in 2008, hit .224 with seven home runs among her 22 hits.
Welch, the 2006 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and now a four-time All-Ivy honoree, hit .376 for the season, with a midseason peak of .430 following an Apr. 16 doubleheader at Rutgers. Welch hit .318 in league games. Welch was a first-team all-leaguer in 2006 and 2008 with a second-team all-league honor in 2007.
