Princeton Football Welcomes Thirty-One Standouts Into Class of 2013
May 27, 2009 | Football
Thirty-one athletic and academic standouts, representing 15 different states, will become part of one of college football's most historic programs this fall. Head coach Roger Hughes, about to enter his 10th season as the leader of the Princeton football program, was proud to announce the Class of 2013 Wednesday.
“Overall, we are pleased with the quality of the recruiting class,” Hughes said. “Some of the skill players will have a chance to help us in some capacity next year. We accomplished our recruiting goals in special teams by signing a kicker, punter and long snapper. We feel that with some development, our linemen and tight ends can become good players.”
While Hughes and his staff have been able to shift players to different positions in order to better maximize their talents, the incoming class does have a greater emphasis on offensive players. Eighteen of the 31 incoming players are projected as offensive players, including five apiece on the offensive line and at running back. With four seniors on the offensive line and senior Jordan Culbreath as the returning unanimous All-Ivy running back, these players could find significant playing time early in their careers.
Defensively, the incoming players are balanced between all three positions. Both the defensive line and linebacking corps will welcome three freshmen, while the defensive backs will bring in four; the defensive backfield will have the earliest need for young players, as the starting trio of Cart Kelly, Wilson Cates and Dan Kopolovich are all entering their final seasons in Orange and Black.
The special teams will bring in three players, including one who may be able to make the quickest jump into the starting lineup. Jason Tiemeier was an all-conference long snapper and could provide an immediate replacement for four-year starter Ryan Pritchard.
