Gemberling and Murphy Sign, Receive Assignments
June 20, 2009 | Baseball
Princeton baseball players Brad Gemberling and Jack Murphy both agreed to terms and were assigned to Minor League teams this week and will begin their pro careers this weekend. The pair was drafted two weeks ago in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.
Gemberling was selected by Arizona in the 24th round of the draft. The Princeton senior, who ranked ninth in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings this season, came to terms with the Diamondbacks and was assigned to the team's Short Season A ball team in Yakima, Wash. Gemberling is penciled in as the team's fifth starter and will make his first start on Tuesday night against the Eugene Emeralds.
Murphy was a 31st-round selection of the Toronto and was assigned to the Blue Jays' Short Season A team in Auburn, N.Y. The Doubledays began their season on Friday night and Murphy went 1 for 3 with a single in his professional debut, catching in the team's opener.
Gemberling and Murphy join Tim Lahey, Erik Stiller and Christian Staehely in the Minor Leagues. Lahey is at the AAA level pitching for the Rochester Red Wings. Stiller pitches for the Akron Aeros at the AA level, and Staehely will pitch for the Everett Aquasox at the Short Season A level.
David Hale was also selected in the draft, but he has yet to come to terms with the Atlanta Braves.
