Men's Golf to Meet No. 1 Stanford at Shinnecock Hills Tuesday
September 14, 2009 | Men's Golf
PRINCETON -- Shinnecock Hills, the host of three U.S. Open tournaments, will be the site of Princeton's men's golf opener Tuesday in a dual match against Stanford.
Five Tigers will line up against five Cardinal, members of the newly crowned No. 1 team in the nation by Golfweek Magazine, with tee times scheduled in the 8 o'clock hour. Each one-on-one win will result in a point for that player's team, with the first team to three points taking the overall victory. Princeton has not played in a dual match, whether total strokes or match play, since the 1997-98 season.
Princeton returns three of its five scorers from the Ivy League Championship event last April, including individual league runner-up Eric Salazar, 11th-place finisher Patrick Wasserman and 32nd-place finisher Greg Stamas.
Shinnecock Hills, in eastern Long Island, is the only course to have hosted U.S. Open tournaments in three centuries. The second-ever U.S. Open was there in 1896, followed by tournaments in 1995 and 2004.
Tuesday's event will be the first of back-to-back events on Long Island for Princeton, which will play at another facility to host the U.S. Open, Bethpage State Park, though on the Red course instead of the Open-hosting Black. The St. John's-hosted McLaughlin Invitational will run Friday through Sunday.
