PRINCETON --Princeton's golf teams will play their first tournaments of the fall season this weekend, with the women hosting the Princeton Invitational and the men traveling to the Red Course at Bethpage State Park for the St. John's McLaughlin Invitational.
The 13th annual Princeton Invitational women's golf
tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday at Springdale Golf Club
in Princeton, N.J. There will be one round per day on the par-72
Springdale course, which measures 6,108 yards.
Twelve teams will compete, including Bucknell, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Harvard, Lehigh, Monmouth, Penn, Princeton, Richmond, Rollins, St. John's and Walsh (Ohio).
Saturday tee times are as follows:
8-8:09 a.m.: Individuals from Princeton, Penn, Georgetown, St. John's (1st & 10th holes)
8:18-8:54 a.m.: Georgetown/St. John's/Penn (1st); Walsh/Monmouth/FDU (10th)
9:03-9:39 a.m.: Harvard/Rollins/Princeton (1st); Richmond/Lehigh/Bucknell (10th)
Sunday's times will be in the same range, depending on Saturday's finish.
Harvard was the team champion a year ago by just two shots over Princeton, while Chelsea Curtis (Georgetown) and Renee Cloutier (St. John's) were individual co-champions in 2008.
The Tigers will return five players from a year ago but will be without the graduated Marlowe Boukis and Susannah Aboff. In Princeton's last collegiate golf event on the women's side, Aboff was playing in the NCAA East Regional as an individual after winning her second straight Ivy League individual title. Joining Michelle Grilli, Kate Scarpetta, Rachel Blum, Maggie Boberg and Wonji Choi are a trio of freshmen in Tiffany Dong, Olivia Garard and Anna Jang.
At the McLaughlin Invitational, Princeton's men will compete Friday and Saturday against Coastal Carolina, UNC Wilmington, Boston College, Connecticut, Creighton, Dartmouth, Harvard, Iona, Johnson & Wales, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, St. Thomas (Minn.), Temple, Towson, Villanova, West Florida.
Princeton's men were further east on Long Island Tuesday, squaring off against No. 1 Stanford in the team's first dual meet since the 1997-98 season. Junior Eric Salazar, who came within a playoff of winning the Ivy League individual title last season, won his match and senior Greg Stamas halved his against their highly touted Stanford opponents, but the Cardinal won the team event 3 1/2 points to 1 1/2.
A year ago at the McLaughlin, Princeton finished 11th of 18 teams. Current senior Juan Pablo Candela was Princeton's top finisher at 20th overall.
Speaking of the senior class, 2010 grads make up almost half the roster, with Candela, Stamas, Tom Klingman and Jake Skinner entering their final season. Also back are Salazar and sophomores Evan Harmeling, Chase Lovett-Woodsum and Patrick Wasserman. Princeton has one newcomer, Bernard D'Amato.
