September 17, 2009 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
PRINCETON -- With the Ivy League announcement today that the Ivy golf championships in April will be played at Baltusrol Country Club, the Princeton men's and women's golf teams will play official events at a combined four venues that have hosted the U.S. Open or U.S. Women's Open championships.
The Princeton men's team this week played a dual against Stanford at Shinnecock Hills on eastern Long Island, host of the 1896, 1995 and 2004 U.S. Opens. This weekend, the men's team will play in a tournament at Long Island's Bethpage State Park, home of the Black Course that hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens.
In March, the women's team's first spring tournament will bring the Tigers to North Carolina's Pinehurst Resort, where the U.S. Open was played in 1999 and 2005. Pinehurst will also be the first site to host both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women's Open in the same year in 2014.
Baltusrol, the newly announced host of the Ivy League championship April 23-25, has hosted the second-most U.S. Opens of any course, with seven. Oakmont, outside Pittsburgh, holds the record with eight. Baltusrol, in northern New Jersey, hosted the U.S. Open in 1903, 1915, 1936, 1954, 1967, 1980 and 1993. It hosted the U.S. Women's Open in 1961 and 1985.
