January 14, 2010 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/14/10) - The Princeton women's basketball team will hold its annual Pink Zone game on Saturday, Jan. 30 when it hosts Yale at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m.
All fans wearing pink will get into the game for free. If you forget to don your pink, Pink Zone t-shirts will be available for purchase for $15 with all proceeds going to local and national breast cancer organizations.
Fans will see pink around Jadwin Gym including balloons, decorations and programs. Princeton Dining Services will provide free coffee, pink cupcakes and cookies.
The coaching staff, cheer squad and pep band will all be wearing pink. The Princeton Tigers, who currently boast a 13-2 overall record, will weave pink laces in their sneakers and wear pink socks and warm-ups.
At halftime, members of the audience who have been affected by breast cancer will be asked to come down to the court and form a human pink ribbon at center court.
A best-dressed fan contest will also be held, with five random fans being selected with the most "pink" spirit. The crowd will then decide the winner with a show of applause.
Donation boxes to support breast cancer research can be found in the lobby of Jadwin Gym, where local organizations will also set up booths to provide information about their organizations and about breast cancer.
Locally, Princeton has teamed up with Princeton HealthCare System's Breast Health Center, the YWCA Princeton's Breast Cancer Resource Center, Princeton Against Cancer Together (PACT), UBS Financial Services, Inc., and Stonebridge at Montgomery senior living community. The event is presented by Nassau Inn, UBS and Stonebridge.
Monies from the event will benefit the University Medical Center, The Breast Cancer Resource Center and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow lost her battle with breast cancer on January 24, 2009.
The 2009 campaign raised over $1.3 million, reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and organizations. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation.
