Tigers Win Six Events at Home Meet

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/24/10) - The Princeton track and field teams resumed action on Saturday, Jan. 23 at a home meet, the Princeton Relays. Twelve teams came to Jadwin Gym to compete in the non-scoring meet.
The Tigers won six events at the meet, including the weight throw, high jump, pole vault, mile, 1000-meter run and the distance medley relay.
Junior Emma Ruggiero won the weight throw reaching16.19 meters (53-01.50). Sophomore Alyssa Pehmoeller set a new personal best, by half of a meter, in the event and finished second with a throw of 15.80 (51-10.00). Junior Thanithia Billings was fourth throwing to 15.14 (49-08.25) and was second in the shot put reaching 14.12 (46-04.00).
Junior Tiffany Liu medaled in two events, the long jump and the triple jump. She was second in the long jump, reaching 5.50 meters (18-00.50) and was third in the triple jump at 11.33 (37-02.25). Classmate Bianca Williams placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.90 (35-09.25).
Junior KC Wade won the women's high jump at 1.65 meters (5-05.00), as the only competitor to get over 1.60 meters.
The Tigers had three competitors in the pole vault and the trio placed first, third and fourth. Freshman Tory Worthen won the event at 3.85 meters (12-07.50), while sophomore Lydia Arias was third at 3.30 (10-10.00) and freshman Lauren Tauscher was fourth at 3.15 (10-04.00)
Freshmen Abidemi Adenikinju and Erin Guty were second and third in the 60-meter dash at 7.76 and 7.80, respectively.
The remaining events were run in sections.
Freshman Lauren Zumbach had the best time out of 31 runners in the mile at 5:14.82.
The women swept the 1000-meter run. Sophomore Alex Banfich took top honors with a time of 2:57.08. Juniors Ashley Higginson and Liz Deir weren't far behind at 2:57.24 and 2:57.60, respectively.
The Tigers also won the distance medley relay. Reilly Kiernan, Lauren Lewis, Katherine Sirico and Alex Banfich ran an 11:52.44 in the event. A second group, made up of Ashley Higginson, Joie Hand, Maggie McKeever and Mel Newbery, finished third at 11:56.44.
Princeton has three options in which to send its track and field athletes next week. The Washington Invitational in Seattle, the Penn State Open and the Armory Quad Meet in New York City.
