Men's Swim/Dive Team Holds Slim Edge After Day 1 Of HYP
January 30, 2010 | Men's Swimming and Diving
HYP is supposed to be the most exciting meet of the Ivy League regular season; midway through the men's meet, it is certainly setting up that way. Princeton holds a slim 100-86 lead over Harvard through 10 events of the three-team meet at DeNunzio Pool.
After Friday night's session, both teams hold commanding leads over Yale. Princeton leads 138-47, while Harvard holds a 139-44 edge over the Bulldogs. Princeton won six events during the first session, while Harvard won four.
Princeton opened the weekend by winning the 200 free relay in a time of 1:21.20. The quartet of Brian Barrett, Andres Tung, Matt Lamonaca and Geoff Faux topped Harvard's top team, while the Tiger foursome of David Reid, Peter Fellowes, George Rae-Grant and Alex Verdegem placed third overall in 1:23.93.
Harvard finished 1-2 in the three-meter diving competition, with Michael Stanton winning the event with 339.55 points. Princeton's top finisher was senior Michael Papageorge (296.80), while freshman Stevie Vines recorded a top-five finish with 286.85 points.
Harvard's Mason Brunnick won the 200 free in 1:39.29, but Princeton took the next six spots; Jon Hartmann finished second overall in 1:39.46, while Will Lawley took third in 1:39.74. Other Tigers near the top were Colin Hanna, Colin Cordes and Christopher Quemena.
Kaspar Raigla placed third in the 100 back with a time of 50.88, while Harvard's Jordan Diekema won the event in 49.65. Yale freshman Mike Dominski placed second in 50.68; with five of the top nine finishers, the 100 back was the Bulldogs' top event Friday night.
Princeton got back on the winning track when Jon Christensen won the 100 breast in 55.36. Kila Pickering and Rae-Grant added top-eight times in the event. Another Princeton win came from sophomore Bryan Tay, who won the 200 fly in 1:49.08. Teammate Brett Lullo took fourth in 1:50.79.
The first 1-2-3 finish for any team belonged to Princeton, and it happened in the 50 free. The exciting win belonged to Lamonaca, whose time of 20.39 topped both Tung (20.66) and Geoff Faux (20.70). Cordes added a fifth-place finish in 21.11.
Christensen picked up a second victory when he won the 200 IM in 1:49.28, while Quemena finished third in 1:51.32.
Harvard returned the 1-2-3 favor in the 1650, which was won by Alex Meyer in 15:13.80. Blake Lewkowitz and Brunnick finished second and third for the Crimson, while Colin Hanna (15:43.19) and Travis McNamara (15:50.01) placed fourth and fifth for the Tigers.
