Walburn Lifts Men's Soccer to 3-2 Win Over Columbia

NEW YORK (10/16/10) - Senior Josh Walburn scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to lead the Princeton men's soccer team to a dramatic 3-2 win over Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 16 at Columbia Soccer Stadium. Walburn scored the game winner off a free kick from 20 yards that sailed into the left corner netting.
Princeton remains undefeated in the Ivy League with a 3-0 record to sit in first place in the league standings with Penn. The Tigers are now 8-3-1 overall and have won the last seven games, scoring three goals in each of the last seven matches.
Princeton had a 1-0 lead at halftime but Columbia scored twice within one minute to take a 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute. The Tigers scored the equalizer in the 77th minute.
Columbia outshot Princeton 7-2 in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Sean Lynch made four saves in the first half and Walburn made a team save as the Tigers scored on their one shot on goal.
The Lions first shot on goal came in the 11th minute when Ronnie Shaban ripped a shot that was saved by the head of Walburn. Two minutes later Columbia struck again when Mike Mazzullo rifled a shot from 25 yards out that was scooped up by Lynch.
Princeton took the lead in the 31st minute when junior Antoine Hoppenot scored on a Walburn feed inside the 18-yard box. Off a throw in, the ball came into the box to O'Neil who faked a shot and passed the ball off to Hoppenot. Columbia keeper Alexander Aurrichio came out to make the stop on O'Neil leaving Hoppenot open on the far post.
Two minutes later the Lions nearly got the equalizer when Hayden Johns launched a shot from 25 yards out that was tipped over the crossbar by Lynch. Lynch would easily stop Johns' second shot on goal one minute later. Columbia wasn't done testing Lynch yet as Peppe Carotenuto bent a shot in on goal in the 35th minute that was saved by Lynch.
After a shot by sophomore Lester Nare was blocked and Aurrichio stopped a Hoppenot left-footed shot in the 59th minute Columbia took over scoring twice to take the lead.
Columbia's Francois Anderson had a hand in both goals to help the Lions take the 2-1 lead. A cross by Anderson to Najem on the doorstep led to Columbia's first goal in the 62nd minute. Anderson scored in the 63rd minute when he fired a shot from 25 yards out far post past Lynch.
The Tigers followed up with two blocked shots, a corner kick and a Nare header saved in the next three minutes.
It looked as though Princeton had tied the game in the 73rd minute when sophomore Matt Sanner header a cross from Hoppenot past Aurrichio but the linesman called an offsides that disallowed the goal.
Senior defender Benjamin Burton tallied the equalizer in the 77th minute on a rebound from junior Brandon Busch. The ball was crossed in to Busch whose initial attempt was saved but the ball came back out and Burton was there to push the ball over the goal line.
Walburn would score the game winner five minutes later.
In the waning minutes Columbia would take four shots in desperation with Lynch making two saves on both shots on goal.
Princeton oushot Columbia 10-6 in the second half, but the Lions finished the game with 13 shots to Princeton's 12. The Tigers won the corner kick battle 6-3.
Lynch finished the game with six saves while Aurrichio made three stops for the Lions which drop to 4-7-1 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Princeton hosts Harvard during Homecoming Weekend on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. The game will be air lived on ESPNU.
