Men's Hockey Takes Exhibition Opener with Last Minute Goal
October 20, 2010 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (10/20/10) - Senior Kevin Lohry's last minute power-play goal lifted the Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-4 win over Trois-Rivieres in its season-opening exhibition game on Wednesday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton trailed by two goals on two occasions at 2-0 and 3-1, but rallied to take a 4-3 lead late in the second period. UQTR evened the game midway through the third period, but Lohry's 5 on 3 goal put the Tigers ahead to stay with 35 seconds remaining.
Freshman Andrew Calof led all Tigers with three points in the win on a goal and two assists. Senior Mike Kramer and sophomore Will MacDonald each had a goal and an assist while senior Matt Arhontas had two helpers.
UQTR struck first in the game when Etienne Bellavance-Martin sent a wrist shot through a screen four minutes into the game. Olivier Donovan put home a rebound 10 minutes later and the Patriotes led 2-0.
Princeton quickly countered and cut the lead in half when Kramer beat UQTR netminder Vincent Lamontagne. Matt Arhontas started the play in the Tiger zone, chipping it ahead to Calof, who entered the offensive zone on a 2 on 1 with Kramer. Calof drew the defenseman and then sent a pass to Kramer for the goal.
The Patriotes regained the two goal margin early in the second period when Marc-Andrew Laroche scored, but Princeton answered with three straight goals to lead 4-3 after 40 minutes. At the five-minute mark, MacDonald made it 3-2 when he scored on a breakaway shorthanded off a breakaway pass from freshman Alec Rush. Six minutes later freshman Jack Berger scored on the backhand off a feed from Calof as the teams skated four aside. Finally Calof scored on the power play at 15:18 with assists coming from Kramer and Arhontas.
In the third period, UQTR drew even 12:49 into the stanza on a goal from Francis Charland that came on a 4 on 3 power-play, but Princeton answered in the final minute when Lohry scored from the half wall.
Sophomore Mike Condon earned the win for the Tigers, allowing two goals on 12 shots over the second and third periods. Senior Alan Reynolds made 10 saves in the opening period.
Princeton outshot UQTR 45-24 in the game and was 2 for 7 with the man advantage, while killing 5 of 6 penalties taken, including three 5 on 3 power plays against. Princeton scored a power-play, shorthanded and 4 on 4 goal in the game.
Princeton will host another exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., against Morrisville State.
