Walburn Scores Two in Men's Soccer 3-0 Victory Over Dartmouth
October 03, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/2/10) - Senior Josh Walburn had a career outing with five points on two goals and an assist, as the Princeton men's soccer team defeated Dartmouth 3-0 in the Ivy League opener on Saturday, Oct. 2 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
It was the first win over Dartmouth for Walburn and his fellow seniors as they end the Big Green's three-game unbeaten streak in the series.
Princeton came out of the gates in control of the game and took four shots in the first 14 minutes of the game. The stingy Tiger defense held Dartmouth without a shot on net until the 58th minute.
Sophomore Matt Sanner broke up a pass at the midfield line and sent a ball up the field to Hoppenot. Hoppenot got around his defender and put a shot on net in the 10th minute. Two minutes later a set piece was taken 20 yards out by Walburn but the ball curved around the wall and was stopped by the hands of goalkeeper Sean Donovan. Hoppenot gave it another go two minutes later when he had a near range shot go just wide of the post.
Walburn tallied his first of the night in the 35th minute when he picked up a cross from Hoppenot from the far side into the box. Walburn had an open net as Donovan was anticipating a shot from Hoppenot.
Dartmouth started to catch up offensively and ended the half with seven shots to Princeton's eight. The Big Green's best chance came with eight minutes left in the first half when Andrew Olsen had a shot go just wide of the far post.
Less than a minute into the second half, Walburn scored his second with help again from Hoppenot as well as junior Colby Hahn. Sophomore Mark Linnville launched a throw in into the box where Hahn and Hoppenot both batted the ball around before Walburn headed the ball into the net.
Both teams had great chances blocked by the opposing defense early in the second session. Lucky Mkosana had a chance blocked by senior Teddy Schneider five minutes in and in the 55th minute junior Manny Sardinha had a chance turned away.
Finally in the 58th minute Dartmouth had its first shot on goal but it was a weak shot by Mkosana that was easily collected by goalkeeper Sean Lynch.
Princeton got lucky in the 59th minute when freshman Chris Benedict made a team save. After Lynch came out of the box, Olsen took the ball to the goal but a sprinting Benedict won the foot race and used a flick of the right leg to send the ball out of bounds for a Dartmouth corner kick.
Sardinha scored his second career goal and first of the season in the 71st minute to put the game out of reach for the Big Green. Sophomore Dylan Bowman crossed the ball into the box and Walburn blasted the ball in on goal but it was saved by Donovan, but Sardinha got to the rebound and put it away for good.
Dartmouth's best chances of the game came in the final three minutes, but it was too little, too late. Daniel Keat had a shot saved by Lynch had the near post and 20 seconds later Mkosana lifted the ball just over the cross bar.
Dartmouth, who hadn't trailed by two goals all season, finished the game with a 16-14 advantage in shots on goal. Princeton had seven shots on goal to Dartmouth's four. Donovan made four saves in the loss for Dartmouth, while Lynch made three in his third shutout of the season.
Princeton improves to 4-3-1 overall, winning its third straight, and 1-0 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth moves to 4-3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The last time Princeton had a three-goal win over Dartmouth was in 2001, when the Tigers won the Ivy League and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
