Walburn Nets Golden Goal on a PK in 3-2 Win Over Seton Hall
October 06, 2010 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/5/10) - The Ivy League Player of the Week Josh Walburn scored the golden goal on a penalty kick to give the Princeton men's soccer team a 3-2 win over Seton Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 5 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The Tigers have won four straight and improve to 5-3-1 on the season.
Princeton got off to a 2-0 start but Seton Hall (3-5-1) rallied to score two goals in the second half.
Princeton was awarded the penalty kick in the 98th minute when junior Antoine Hoppenot was taken down inside of the box on the far side. Walburn took the shot and blasted the ball past the left side of goalkeeper Kevin Bonder.
It was a tale of two halves as Princeton dominated the first half and Seton Hall controlling the second after it started to break down the Tigers' defense.
Hoppenot scored about 12 minutes into the game when Walburn threaded a ball up the right flank and Hoppenot fought off his two defenders and sent the ball into the upper left 90.
Junior Manny Sardinha gave Princeton the 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute on a great chip from sophomore Dylan Bowman. Sophomore Lester Nare fed Bowman the ball and Bowman chipped it from the left side over into the right side of the 18 to Sardinha who picks up his second goal in as many games.
Six minutes later Dritan Sela cut Princeton's lead back to one when he teamed up with Andrew Welker for a give-and-go. Sela delivered a low shot that slipped through the wet hands of goalkeeper Sean Lynch on this drizzly night.
Max Garcia evened the game with less than six minutes remaining in regulation when he headed in a long pass from Victor Manosalvas that came from the touch line near his own team bench.
Seton Hall ended up outshooting Princeton, 19-17, after a 12-4 advantage in the second half. Lynch and Bonder each finished with seven saves as shots on goal were in the Tigers' favor 10-9.
The Pirates took four corners to Princeton's three and received three yellow cards, while Princeton picked up just one.
