Sanner Keeps No. 20 Men's Soccer in First Place with 1-0 Win Over Cornell
October 31, 2010 | Men's Soccer
ITHACA, N.Y. (10/30/10) - Sophomore Matt Sanner scored his second straight game winner, scoring in the 59th minute to give the No. 20 Princeton men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Berman Field.
Sanner scored the lone goal of the game at 58:40 after teammate Josh Walburn's shot deflected off a defender and Sanner was able to get to the ball and kick it over the goal line. All three of Sanner's goals this season have been game-winning goals.
A heavy rotation came from the Cornell bench after the goal. A shot by Patrick Slogic hit the cross bar less then 10 minutes after he checked in. The Big Red would put two of their three shots on goal during the final 10 minutes of the game. Senior keeper Sean Lynch would turn away all three shots on goal of the game for his fifth clean sheet of the season.
Princeton outshot Cornell 11-9, including a 6-2 differential in the first half. Cornell rallied in the second taking seven of their nine shots in the second frame. Scott Brody finished the game with three saves for the Big Red which fall to 4-7-4 overall and 0-4-1 in league play.
The Tigers extend their win streak to nine and improve to 10-3-1 overall and unbeaten in the Ivy League at 5-0. Penn remains in a tie with Princeton in the league standings after a 1-0 win over Brown this evening, and the Tigers and Quakers will meet next Saturday (Nov. 6) on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The last time the Tigers had double digits in wins was in 2001 when the team went 10-3-5 and 5-1-1 in the Ivy League before falling to FDU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. More impressive is that its been 50 years since Princeton started league play going 5-0. The 1960 team started 6-0, losing only to Yale in the final game of the season.
Colgate hosts Princeton on Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the final non-conference game of the season at 7 p.m.
