Colgate Uses Early Rush To Top Football; Ivy Stretch Awaits
October 09, 2010 | Football
Colgate rushed for 360 yards and scored on its first five possessions to power past the Princeton football team 44-10 Saturday afternoon on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
The loss drops Princeton to 1-3, while Colgate improved to 3-2. The Tigers now have a week to prepare for a six-game Ivy stretch, which opens with back-to-back home games over the next two weeks. Princeton will host Brown Oct. 16 at 1:00; the Bears will enter the game 1-0 in Ivy play following its Week 2 win over Harvard.
For the second straight week, the Tigers held an early lead. Princeton went 59 yards in 13 plays on its opening drive to set up a 27-yard field goal for Patrick Jacob. Unfortunately, it would be more than 50 minutes of game action before Princeton would score again, this time on a two-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Wornham to Trey Peacock.
Colgate took control of those 50 minutes early. The Raiders quickly took a 6-3 lead when Nate Eachus, the leading rusher in the FCS, scored from four yards out. Princeton got a brief bit of momentum when linemen Adam Shippey blocked the extra point, but a 28-yard field goal by Colborne and an 18-yard touchdown by Eachus ended that energy. Princeton was within two touchdowns midway through the second quarter, but neither its offense nor defense was able to break the momentum. A fumble and a 3-and-out stopped the offense, and Colgate came back with a 20-yard touchdown run by Noah Jackson and a 39-yard touchdown pass from Greg Sullivan to Doug Rosnick to open a 30-3 halftime lead.
Rosnick and Steve Rizzo scored for Colgate in the second half before Peacock caught his second touchdown pass of the season; the senior wideout fought off a defensive back in the left side of the end zone for a touchdown that completed a 13-play, 65-yard drive.
Peacock ended the game with eight catches for 80 yards and a touchdown, while Andrew Kerr caught seven passes for 59 yards. Wornham completed 20 of 41 passes for 206 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The running game, which was effective in Princeton's opening drive, was basically negated by the scoreboard for much of the game. Senior Jordan Culbreath rushed for 38 yards on nine carries, while classmate Matt Zimmerman rushed for 30 yards on three carries.
Senior Jon Olofsson led Princeton with 10 tackles, including one for loss, while sophomore Tim Kingsbury recorded nine tackles, including six solo stops, and added a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Both Mike Catapano and Blake Clemons recorded eight tackles apiece, while Shippey had five tackles and a fumble recovery to go along with his blocked kick.
