Men's Water Polo Downs MIT; Moves on to Eastern Semifinals
November 19, 2010 | Men's Water Polo
Jack Ruth, Tim Wenzlau and Tommy Donahue each scored twice in the win while Mike Merlone provided 10 saves in goal.
A key to the game was Princeton's ability to draw and convert on man-up opportunities as the Tigers buried five-of-six advantage chances, including three-of-three in the first period to build a lead by tearing down the Engineers defense.
After MIT opened the scoring, Princeton scored four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Wenzlau scored the equalizer, followed by tallies from Chris Cottrell, Tommy Donahue and Matt Hale. MIT got a goal back at the end of the quarter, but three unanswered Tiger goals in the second quarter gave the Tigers a 7-2 lead at halftime.
The win moves Princeton to 18-7 overall this season and sets up a quarterfinal game between the Tigers and Midshipmen. The teams split their regular season games this season both winning 7-6 in their home pools. They also met in the 2009 Eastern Championship game, a game won by Princeton 5-4.
