PRINCETON (11/23/10) - The Princeton women's basketball will head South for the holidays to play in the Vanderbilt Tournament. The Tigers will play the University of Southern California on Friday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m., local time. The winner/loser will play the winner/loser of the Vanderbilt/Quinnipac game on Sunday, Nov. 28 at either 12 or 2 p.m., local time.
Live stats will be available for all four games of the tournament. If Princeton were to play Vanderbilt on Sunday, that game will be webstreamed, for a fee.
Princeton is 2-1 on the season and most recently defeated Lehigh 69-52, delivering the Mountain Hawks their first loss on their home court since the 2007-08 season. The Tigers opened the season with a 41-point victory over Fairleigh Dickinson and lost at the buzzer to Rutgers on the road, 54-53. Sophomore Niveen Rasheed, the Ivy League Player of the Week, leads the Tigers in scoring with 13.7 points and in rebounds with 8.3 boards per game. She also leads the team in steals with eight and assists with nine. Junior Devona Allgood adds 13.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and leads the team in blocks with five. Senior co-captain Addie Micir contributes 11.7 points per game and has hit nine three pointers. The Tigers are shooting 41.9 percent from the field, 32.7 percent from long range and 64.9 percent from the free-throw line. Princeton has a +19 scoring margin and a +6.3 rebounding margin over its opponents this season.This will be the first meeting between Princeton and USC. Princeton has also never played Quinnipiac, but has played Vanderbilt three times. The Tigers are 0-3 against the Commodores. This is Princeton's second trip to the Vanderbilt Tournament. The team came South in 2003 and went 1-1 against Louisville and Samford.
USC is 3-1 on the season and most recently defeated Georgia 71-63 on Tuesday. The squad also defeated Long Beach State and Gonzaga to open the season. All three wins have come at home. It's lone loss was to No. 5/6 Duke, 75-50. Five players are in double digits led by Briana Gilbreath's 12.3 points per game. She is second on the team in rebounds with 7.0 per game, while leading the team in steals with nine and blocks with four. Jacki Gemelos adds 12 points per game and Ashley Corral contributes 11. The pair are also the team leaders in assists with 14 and 12, respectively. Both Cassie Harberts and Christine Marinacci are scoring 10.5 points per game. Marinacci leads the team under the basket with 8.5 rebounds per game. Gilbreath, Gemelos and Corral will all shoot the three, with Gemelos hitting 50 percent of her shots from long range. Harberts has been fouled by far the most on the team, and has shot 16 for 20 from the line. The Trojans shot 42.7 percent from the floor, 35.4 percent from long range and 64.3 percent from the free-throw line. The team averages 70.5 points per game, a +2.8 scoring margin over its opponents and has a -1.5 rebounding margin.
