Trey Peacock Announced As 2010 Bushnell Cup Finalist
November 30, 2010 | Football
Senior wide receiver Trey Peacock, one of two unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selections this season, has been named one of four finalists for the 2010 Asa S. Bushnell Cup, which honors the Ivy League Football Player of Year.
Peacock joins fellow first-team All-Ivy selections Geno Gordon (Harvard), Billy Ragone (Penn) and Nick Schwieger (Dartmouth) as the finalists for the top individual honor in the Ivy League. The 2010 recipient will be unveiled at a special reception and press conference in the Hilton Room of the famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 6, as part of the festivities surrounding the 53rd National Football Foundation Annual Awards Dinner in New York City. George Pyne, former Brown football standout, current NFF Board Member and president of IMG Worldwide's Sports & Entertainment Group, will serve as emcee of the presentation. The winner will be joined by his head coach, Pyne and Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris for the announcement. Others in attendance will include representatives of the media, members of the NFF Board and notable Ivy League alumni and dignitaries.
Peacock (Chandler, Ariz.) completed a brilliant senior season ranked in the top 10 nationally in both receptions per game (7.2) and receiving yards per game (95.5). He ended the season with 11 more catches and 113 more receiving yards than anybody in the Ivy League. Peacock concluded this year with 955 receiving yards, fifth most in one season ever at Princeton. He had four games with at least 100 receiving yards, including a 196-yard receiving day at Lehigh, the eighth-best single-game total in Princeton history.
He caught six touchdown passes on the season from four different players, beginning with an 80-yard touchdown from 2009 starter Tommy Wornham in the opening game at Lehigh. He caught the first pass ever thrown by All-Ivy running back Jordan Culbreath for a 33-yard touchdown against Harvard, and followed with a career-long 92-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Andrew Dixon, who took over when Wornham suffered a season-ending injury in Week 5.
Peacock's final career touchdown came at the Yale Bowl on a 28-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Connor Kelley, who rotated with Wornham during the second half of the season.
Peacock is looking to become the seventh Princeton player to earn the Bushnell Cup. The first Tiger winner was running back Walt Snickenberger, who took the honor in 1974. Current Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett won the first of two consecutive Princeton honors in 1988, with his brother Judd taking the honor during Princeton's 1989 Ivy League championship season. Running back Keith Elias (1992) and linebacker David Patterson (1995) both won during Ivy championship seasons in the 1990s. The most recent Tiger winner was Jeff Terrell, who won the honor after leading the 2006 team to a 9-1 record and Princeton's ninth Ivy League title.
If he wins, Peacock would be the first wide receiver to win the award for Princeton and the fifth overall in the Ivy League.
Presented annually since 1970, the Asa S. Bushnell Cup honors its namesake, a 1921 Princeton alumnus and the commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1938 to 1970. The Bushnell Cup is presented by the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials and is awarded by a vote of the Ivy League's eight head football coaches to the player who displays outstanding qualities of leadership, competitive spirit, contribution to the team, and accomplishments on the field.
