Wrestling Team Places Two At 2010 Southern Scuffle
December 30, 2010 | Wrestling
Sophomore Garrett Frey and junior Daniel Kolodzik both placed eighth at their respective weight classes for the Princeton wrestling team in the 2010 Southern Scuffle.
While both came into Thursday's final day of competition with higher aspirations, the two placewinners is an improvement for Princeton over its performance in 2009. Nobody placed for the Tigers last year, and the team finished 29th. This year, the team ended up 23rd.
Frey, at 125, dropped an 8-6 overtime heartbreaker to third-seeded Ben Kjar of Utah Valley. He assured himself a Top 8 finish with a win over Zach Huxford of George Mason, but a minor injury sustained in the following match forced him to injury default the weekend finale and settle for eighth.
Kolodzik, who was impressive in winning three matches Wednesday, also fell out of the championship round with a 5-3 overtime loss to Indiana's Paul Young. That would be Young's closest match en route to the 157-pound final. Kolodzik shut out Aarin Hynes of Michigan 6-0 to clinch a spot in the Top 8, but lost his final two to end in eighth place.
Both Tony Comunale (133) and Ryan Callahan (174) saw their hopes for a spot in the Top 8 end in the consolation round. Comunale lost 11-7 to Erik Spjut of Virginia Tech, while Callahan was pinned by Minnesota's Scott Glasser.
Princeton will return to the mat the weekend of Jan. 7-8, when it competes at both Clarion and Franklin & Marshall.
