Despite Frey Sweep, Wrestling Drops Season-Opening Duals To Liberty, Binghamton
December 04, 2010 | Wrestling
No. 13 Garrett Frey impressed in his first home matches of the 2010-11 season, earning both a pin and a technical fall, but it wasn't enough to help the Princeton wrestling team to a win over either Liberty or Binghamton Friday night at Dillon Gym.
Frey was the only Princeton wrestler to win both matches of the night, although four other Tigers did win one match. Senior Travis Erdman picked up a pin at 184 pounds, while junior Tony Comunale and freshman Adam Krop both won a close decision at 133. The final Princeton win was a 9-5 comeback for sophomore Zach Bintliff at 141.
Its strength in the lower weights allowed the Tigers to get off to strong starts in both matches. Against Liberty, Frey opened the match with a pin of Joel Stafford in 1:16. It was the 11th win of the season for Frey, who is ranked 13th nationally in the latest Intermat poll.
Krop built the Princeton lead to 9-0, but he had to go above and beyond the seven minutes to get it done. After both competitors scored one escape point in regulation, the two matched escapes in the second overtime session to move to a third session. The two ended up in a scramble, and Krop managed a takedown to earn a 4-2 win.
Liberty needed a win, and Seth Hicks managed a tight 6-5 win over Bintliff to cut the deficit to 9-3. Without a 165-pounder available, head coach Chris Ayres moved three wrestlers up a weight class to avoid the forfeit. Liberty took advantage, earning two major decisions and a pin to build a 17-9 lead.
Trailing 20-9, senior captain Travis Erdman gave the Princeton crowd a jolt by pinning Marcus Nielsen in 36 seconds. Coming off a strong effort at the Keystone Open, Erdman is beginning his final season in impressive style and could be in line for a second career All-Ivy season. It wouldn't be enough in the team match, though, as Liberty closed with two majors to win 28-15.
Princeton built an even bigger lead in the tri-meet finale. A technical fall by Frey gave Princeton a 5-0 lead, and Comunale fought through a tough match to take a 6-4 win over Dan Riggi. Binghamton's Anwar Goeres came into his 141-pound match with a 10-2 record and took an early lead on Bintliff, but he was never able to put the feisty Tiger away.
Bintliff made him pay late. Down 5-4 in the third, the Princeton sophomore pulled off a five-point move to send the Princeton sideline into an uproar. He held on for the 9-5 win and opened an 11-0 lead for the Tigers. It nearly became 14-5 two matches later, as junior Daniel Kolodzik tried for a late rally of his own. Trailing 3-0 in the third quarter, he cut the deficit to 3-2 and looked to have an advantage in a late scramble. Justin Listor was able to avoid the takedown during the final seconds to hold on to the 3-2 win, and Binghamton never looked back. The Bearcats won the final five matches to clinch a 28-11 win.
Princeton will compete in three matches in-state next weekend, beginning with a Saturday tri-meet at Rutgers that includes George Mason. The Tigers' final home match until February will take place Sunday, Dec. 12, when they take on Rider at 1 p.m.
