Women's Squash Honors Championship Class While Hosting #2 Trinity Saturday
February 18, 2010 | Women's Squash
One of the greatest classes in the proud history of Princeton women's squash will play its final home match Saturday at noon at the Jadwin Squash Courts, as the fourth-ranked Tigers will take on No. 2 Trinity in the final match before the Howe Cup national team championships, held next weekend at Yale.
The class of Neha Kumar, Emery Maine, Kaitlin Sennatt, Amanda Siebert and Vanessa Yu have led Princeton to three straight national team championships and two Ivy League titles (2007, 2009). Each has recorded at least one standout win during their careers.
Kumar has dealt with injuries through her career, but they haven't stopped her in the big matches. She defeated Penn's Alisha Turner in the 2008 national final to give Princeton momentum against the top-ranked team and was unbeaten in a pair of 5-4 Howe Cup wins last season.
Maine walked on as a sophomore and immediately became a hero. She won the clinching match in the 2008 final over Penn, and she had a 3-0 win in the 2009 final, a 5-4 win over Harvard.
Sennatt was unbeaten as a freshman at the bottom of the lineup, but her biggest win came in the 2009 semifinal against Trinity. Trailing 2-1 at one point and facing match ball in the decisive match, Sennatt topped Joann Jee 10-9 in the fifth to send Princeton to its third straight final.
Siebert has played No. 1 for Princeton for the better part of three seasons, and she won the final match of the 2009 team season. Trailing 2-1, 5-2 in the fourth, Siebert won 16 of the next 17 points against Nirasha Guruge to clinch the third straight team championship for Princeton.
Yu has played the least amount of varsity action for Princeton, but she had a key win against No. 5 Yale earlier this season. The Tiger senior topped Katherine Harrison 3-0 to help Princeton to a 5-4 thriller over the Bulldogs.
